So to continue my quest for more HP on a stock 230
(I wish to attempt to try increasing more HP on a current rebuilt motor. So I don’t wish at this time to tear it down for internal mods like cams and polishing)

Anyway. it has already been suggested in an earlier tread here by dozermsn , who has tried this, that the later heads (casting #1676337-2) increases HP a bit over the earlier heads.
He wrote that simply swapping out an earlier head to this later style head was noticable.

Available data out there shows progressive increase in HP through the years of the flathead manufacture.

http://carnut.com/specs/gen/dodge50.html

For instance a 230 flat head dodge of 1954 vintage, is about 110 HP
where as a 230 flat head motor of 1959 is rated at 135 HP

quite an increase in 5 years development.

So here’s my nagging question:

Was this increase mostly due to the later, differently designed head, or were there other internal changes going on as well to get that 25 additional HP out of these motors?

I can only assume the basic casting of the block was the same. Pistons rods and crank /stroke is the same?
I see the intake manifold with 1 bbl Carter carb remained the same too

Was it a change as well in the cam design?

Or was it simply a better designed head that added all this HP?

Inquiring minds want to know!
