Having raced these engines many years ago, I have to agree. The biggest issue as I recall is improving the air flow through the engine. We had a guy used to make tuned length extractor exhausts that made a big difference, then intake design, carburation, compression ratio, cam and distributor all helped. The later heads had better flow characteristics around the valves combined with higher ratio almost creating a mild squish situation, which could be improved with more work. Even tripple SU type carbs with extended inlet tracts. Most of this stuff was "home grown" as most of us were mechanical guys. Breathing was the biggest gains for us.
