Porting heads you gain hp but lose torque which isn’t good in a truck application. Basically what he was saying though is that it’s not so much opening the flathead up...it’s about getting the pressure in #6 the same as in #1. Dodge acknowledged it was a huge problem when they moved the outlet on the later 230’s but according to George, adding another port is a huge benefit in power doing just that.
I’d be interested in hearing from someone that added only dual exhaust & no other mod. He says they’ve proven it on a dyno with a stock motor...I’d like to see that.
My whole engine is modified so I will be of no help determining which mod made the biggest single difference. My thought in anyone building a 230 is to at very minimum, have the head shaved by someone capable of measuring your valve clearance. This almost costs nothing because anyone doing a proper rebuild is likely going to surface the head at the very least anyway.
Then I would have a bigger cam ground. No added cost. One grind costs the same as another...just get the cam from a reliable source & I'm told by a reliable source the VPW hi performance cams are no good.
Thirdly, I’d run dual exhaust but I can appreciate there’s lots of guys restoring trucks that don’t want duals...I’d personally still do the first two modifications.
