as you state here cams were always changing in profile. after ww2 fuel got better and beter until the 70s when it started going backwards. just a cam and shaved head makes a huge difference in power. I dont think the center dump manifold really makes much difference exhaust flow doesn't much come into play until you hit rpms that these engines are almost never in.
