Is there any way to repair pitted axle shaft?

Above (I hope) is a picture of the left front axle shaft from my '49 B1. Some of what you see in the picture is grease and can be wiped off but most of it is pitting. Can this be welded and re-ground or does it need to be replaced? Am I getting too anal? Should I just run it?
