My truck measures 20-1/4" in the front and 20-3/4" in the rear. The winch itself, as put together, measures 20-1/2", front and rear, just like yours. I'm pretty sure all the bolts were installed when I took it out, so I don't know what's up with all that. My shaft and bushings were all worn out, but not c.ckeyed like you'd expect if the live and dead ends of the winch were c.cked 1/2" out of alignment.
Does yours have a spacer ring about 1/4" wide on either end of the shaft keys that the sliding clutch slides on? Mine only had one on it, but the parts diagram showed two so I made another one. I think the function is to keep the shaft keys from cutting into the gear housing or the drum. I thought that might account for 1/4" difference in spacing, though when I look at it, it doesn't seem that anything would slide any closer together even without the spacer ring.
It now sounds like I'm going to need to weld up and re-drill the holes both front and rear. Front ones will be tricky since I can't very well put the whole truck in the drill press. At least I know the winch is right and the truck is wrong.
