I think that the valves in my engine are way out of adjustment because of the "clattery" sound which I thought was a from the timing chain and I did have a slack chain and replaced it but the sound persists. I figure its the valves. I have a 251 CI dodge engine. How do you proceed. I know the best results are with a hot engine. How do I know the procedure? Can I tell which valve is opening using the distrubutor? Do I open the valve cover(s) and use 2 wrenches- one to hold the lock nut and other to turn the tappet than relock it with the other nut? The noice is very anoying and although the engine runs strong (40+lbs oil pressure, 18" vacuum), I am worried about valve damage.
I really appreciate any help or references.
