carb runs out of fuel

I have had my carb run out of fuel twice requiring AAA tow home. When I pull off the top of the carb, the bowl is empty. I take out the float, look at the rubber tipped inlet valve, Don't see anything wrong, put it back together and it will run fine in my driveway for awhile. The second time it happened, I was a mile from home but it stopped in a inconvenient part of the road. Someone said to check the fuel pressure. I di and I forgot the reading but was on the low side, maybe 4 lbs. I decided to put a "T" in line and Check again while the truck was idling. I got around 5 lbs steady. I did notice some leaking around the Nipple fitting I had used Permatex Aviation #3. 1st what do you folks use to seal threads on Fuel fittings? 2nd any Comments on the Fuel pressure. Is it worth trying a different fuel pump or replacing that valve? I don't want to get stuck somewhere for a third time.
