obviously someone used rtv silicone on the top fuel gage sender assy when installing it in the tank and the modern 'gasoline' (far cry from real gas) rapidly dissolved the rtv, the only way to properly fix this is to remove the tank and have it cleaned out by a radiator shop, the pick up tube needs the same thing done as well as the steel fuel line and any rubber lines, the silicone will dissolve into 'buggers' and needs to be removed, there is probably rtv in the carb including the needle / seat as well as accelerator pump and all jets, needs a complete dis-assembly clean out and rebuild kit, its sad how a 'convenience' product can do so much harm when the original paper gasket with a coating of grease on it would do the job with less problems! the rtv will dissolve into 'worms' that will coagulate and continue to give you grief! thats why the full clean out must be performed! good luck
