oil sludge removal?

I know you guys would know better than I do. In tearing down the engine for cleanup and paint I removed the valve cover gaskets. I don't plan on tearing the entire engine down but would like to clean out the sludge that is in there. would spraying diesel fuel in there work or create more of a problem than I already have. The engine was running well when I removed it from the truck hence why I don't feel like doing a total rebuild at this time. I am assuming that if I remove the oil pan the fuel will drain right out. Any advice from those that have done this before would be great. thanks
