If it is a flat head I have had most people tell me if you disturb the sludge it will clog the oil ports and not to use detergent oil for the same reason unless the pan and valve covers are removed and a good cleaning is done then I would use detergent oil but change it soon after start up. I would highly recommend that you also check the water tube behind the pump and remove the freeze plugs and wash out the water jacket while you have the chance
