Cleaning out the macro sludge, as you have done, is prudent. I had a friend who blew an engine from a 'crud burst' after driving 1200 miles on a flathead that had never been out of town.
I have had very good luck adding a couple oz of Kroil (Kano Labs in TN) to the motor oil of a normal 'dirty' engine. It breaks things loose quickly. This means additional filter/oil changes if you want to aviod problems.
One or 2 Kroil cycles and you can use synthetic or dino w no problem.
