Starting April 1, 2008 Massachusetts is moving to a "managed competition" system. This is an attempt by the Massachusetts Division of Insurance to entice national insurance companies to do business here. Rather than the state set rate, companies will be able to charge what they want for the different risks they insure (in theory).

The state set rate caused a mass exodus of insurance carriers from this state. Presently only 19 companies write private passenger auto insurance in the state of Massachusetts. By contrast, in 1989 there were 61 companies.

Geico won't write policies here, I'm not sure if that is good or bad, but they seen to like to run a lot of TV ads here. Same story for Progressive, although Progressive is supposed to come on board soon.

All my insurance is handled through my insurance agent. His most important task is to stamp official documents, assuring the Registry of Motor Vehicles that I have insurance, so I can get license plates, and registrations.

So the question is, do you have to use an insurance agent? Or, are you able to buy directly online from places like Geico, does your RMV require proof of insurance, and how do you handle that without an agent?

Thanks
