If you're talking about the CA variety, like near Angles Camp, no way.
Those who mentioned that a Lion is about the same size as a deer and therefore a 22 magnum will work, are way off base.
A Cougar is compact, but they are lightning fast and all muscle. Their front forearms are twice as big as a man's, they can rip you apart with one swipe, one got to within 6 feet of me once, in a full charge, my hair is standing up right now recalling it....
You need stopping power. The 22 mag might kill it but it wouldn't stop it...not before whoever shot it was badly mauled.
In Pagosa, one took down the neighbors mule, it took two shots with a 30-06 to drop it and two swipes by Jonas to put the mule down, you can axe him.....
