I agree with most of what you say. People thinks appearances is the most important thing. Not that it is built so cheaply that it will fall apart in 2 years.
I will never uses pressboard or chip board. I can smell it and it makes me walk away. All my cabinets are made of plywood. I started making my own when I needed to replace the one above my refrigerator. We bought a new refrigerator and needed a slightly smaller cabinet above it. They wanted $700 for a matching one. I built it for under $150 including the router bits. No one has been able to pick it out when I ask they to tell me which one is the replacement. I have built several cabinets since then all of the boxes are Arctic Birch plywood with the face frame and doors of solid hardwood. They are better quality and are custom fit for a lot less money. But there is no labor costs or profit included in my cabinets.
