When I ordered my Hastings rings for my 265 flathead six, I called the Hastings tech assistance number, and the lady I spoke to said the 3-piece oil ring goes in the third groove, and she said the one-piece oil ring goes in the fourth groove. Seeing some of the responses to your question, I have to wonder if I got the right answer from them, so I may call them again to see what they say this time (I still haven't assembled the engine). In any case, Marty, I recommend YOU call them as well, or you can email their tech support department.
Please post what you find out, if you do end up contacting Hastings.
