I went to the garage and looked at the set of pistons from my 230. This is an engine I rebuilt about 17 years ago, and later took it apart to check some things and ended up deciding to go with the 265 I'm working on now.

Anyway, the rings are still on the pistons, and the way I had installed them was with the 3-piece oil ring assembly in the third groove, and the one-piece in the fourth groove. I'm usually pretty picky about following instructions to a "T," so I suspect this is the correct way.

Also, I have a partial set of Grant rings, with all the original packaging and instructions. It indicates the same ring placement as what I've stayed in the paragraph above, and in my earlier post.

Having said all of the above, I did find a couple of old (used) pistons that came out of a 265 engine, and those had the one-piece ring in the third groove, and the 3-piece ring in the fourth groove, so that may potentially muddy the waters a bit.

All in all, my information seems to point in one direction. I still recommend that you call or email Hastings to be sure for your situation. Nothing like getting it from the horse's mouth. I've found that the manufacturers seem to be more than happy to answer questions.
