You understand the flare fitting seals on the tapered contact face, not on the threads, right? Pipe dope on the threads won't help. It can't hurt to try a bit on the flare part and see what happens. I've done that successfully on brake fittings, but I'm not proud of it. If we're talking real high-pressure hydraulics with good long steel threads that you can put a lot of torque on, maybe try a copper washer in there where the flared surfaces touch. I haven't tried that on anything, but it seems like you could get enough squeeze from the fitting threads to form the washer into a conical shape. Again, no harm if it doesn't work.
