I've been waiting for someone with more experience than I have to respond, but I will say this. I've owned lots of trucks with split ring rims. How many millions have been or are still on the road today?
I can't share a personal experience, or even one of a friend who has had a split ring blow off under any circumstances.
I'm sure it has happened, but I wonder how many of those occurences were really due to careelessness or re-mounting a rusty ring to a rusty wheel?
Or how many "stories" are actually referring to a true split rim wheel, which is completely different than a split ring rim?
If a person is concerned, there are a lot of ways of protecting from injury.
