Earlier this year I dutifully checked all my fluids and had to add a lot of gear oil to the front axle/differential. Of course it promptly started dripping out near the knuckles... So my winter project for the next few weeks will be to rebuild it.
I have four of the bronze axle bushings that came with the truck. I measured them and they are fine. I'll ether borrow, buy or make the tool to pull them out. I've studied the book several times and think I understand it.
My questions:
If the axle has groves in it where the seals ride, can we get a speedy sleeve on it?
Are the "U" joints that connect the inner and outer shafts usually in ok shape? I've never seen anything about people replacing them.
I think most folks believe it best to leave the bronze bushing on the upper part of the knuckle instead of using a bearing. Does everyone agree with that?
It looks like parts are available from the usual sources.
I would think double lipped seals would be the way to go, but I wonder if they are really needed?
Any things I need to watch out for? I've looked at the online image-event slide show on a rebuild and it does not appear to be too much drama.
Happy New year and thanks for your advice.
Wayne
