Hi all,
I am trying to set the timing on my 1955 Flathead 230. I just set the points at 0.020 and it runs/idles well (except backfiring when moving quickly from idle). When I rotate the distributor to set the timing I can not get it to be less then about +10 degrees even when I turn the distributor as far as it will go counter-clockwise. If I turn it clockwise the timing gets even larger (like +30 estimated from the marks). The engine will die after about 1/2 back clockwise.
I disconnected the vacuum advance from the carb, and the points were set to 0.020. I was timing on the #1 plug.
Anyone have any thoughts about what this might be?
Thanks,
don
