Sounds like two hard heads encountered each other at the border. One was crossing the border, the other was working at the border.
I doubt that the Canadian hard head would have come out so well if he had been crossing into Mexico. Certainly not if he had been in the interior of Mexico.
In each case, answer the questions and go on your way.
I came into LAX the other day. The customs and immigration line was an hour and a half long. I doubt that any agent would have had much patience left after interviewing hundreds of people. It's a lousy job. Nothing to look forward to other than sitting in a box all day long asking the same questions day after day.
