Cable or rod?

While the frame is out I'm working on lots of little things. One of which is putting the emergency brake back together on the transfer case.

My setup had the cable actuated system. I know they later changed to a rod. I still have the cable and it seems in decent shape. Any reason to switch to the later style rod?
