The trucks with the hand brake control cable (up to serial #83919836 Detriot and #88766179 San Leandro) have a different transfer case crossmember profile than the trucks with the rods. Tha cable passes through an inverted u-bolt retainer attached to the rear flange of the crossmember.
The trucks with the rods have a transfer case crossmember with a flare up in the rear flange to allow for adequate clearance of the rod. If you wnat to change from the cable to the rod you will need to modify the rear flange of the early crossmember.
I agree with Clint's observations that the cables, if well cared for, are more responsive and forgiving than the rods. "Spare the rod, spoil the child."
