8v battery

My WDX came to me with the original 6v charging system, but it has an 8v battery. I have owned PWs before with this arrangement, and they worked fine, but I always wondered what happens in the charging process. Does the generator actually put out and maintain 8vs in the battery, or is it just that the 8v battery has a greater capacity for maintaining higher amperage than the 6v, thereby providing better starting capacity?
And what effect, if any, does the presence of the 8v battery have on 6v bulbs in the lighting?
Please provide your answers in language that a non-electrician can understand. :-)
