How To? remove really stuck valve guides

Hi , I'm rebiulding a 230 and have to remove some 60 year old valve guides. According to the workshop manual I am to "drive them down" into the tapit chamber.
Yes, I have made an appropiate "drive tool on the lathe".
Well, nothing (it seems) is going to make those guides budge. And I'm afraid I'll damage the block if I keep pounding on it.
Any suggestions.. drill them out?
