Its good to have all this mechcanical wisdom at my fingertips.
For the record: I drilled out the old guides in three stages. The guides came out easily then. Yes, It tool about another hour to clean out the "thin shell" that was left behind --with a small curved tip chisel. And Yes I'll have to kiss the inside of holes with a reamer before I put in the new guides. But all in all -- a successful day.
