points problem

I have a 48 ffpw with a poly 318 in it. It is eating points at an extrordinary rate. Put a new set in last October and went for a ride today truck ran terible then died. thought it might be a vapor lost as I just put a new cap on but fuel delivery cheked out ok. truck would not restart finally checked the points they are no good. have not used the truck that much since october. Is this a bad set of points or could it be another problem. Thanks in advance for any help.
