As far as I know all the single wheel 4wd trucks have a slightly wider track in the front then the rear, normally about 1 inch.
I checked the 1964 and 1969 dealer books. They list the front tread width of a single wheel as:
64 3/4 in 1964
65.86 in 1969
I think that change most likely had to do with the change in rims then the axle, but I could be wrong.
The single rear wheel truck has a rear tread width of:
65 inches in 1964
64.80 inches in 1969
Remember the tires on a dual rear wheel truck have a different offset, so that effects the way that axle looks.
The numbers I have for the rear axle tread width on a dual rear wheel truck are for the center between the two wheels, so you may not get a good idea of the rear wheel width.
The front axle tread width with dual rear wheels is:
62 1/2 in 1964
65.68 in 1969
I think that is all due to a rim with less offset to the inside though, I am willing to bet the Dana 70 6 lug and 8 lug front axles are within an each of each other in width.
I think just putting a 1961-68 Dana 70 under your truck will work out just fine based on these numbers. As far as I can tell the D300 front axle has a tread width of 65 1/4 inches, or 1/2 inch wider then the W300 single wheel.
