Eric, I always chained my trucks down across the axle tubes like you described. Always worked pretty well. Recently I talked to professional car hauler/towing guy and he said "Never chain to axle tubes always to frame. Truck/car rocking on springs will damage wheel bearings. This is common occurance." I guess this occurs because of the rocking on bearings without them turning. I had to admit it makes sense.
