The bearings get repeatedly hammered and develope flat spots on the rollers. Back in the 60s there was some headscratching for awhile until someone figured out what was happening to brand new vehicles shipped by rail. The term coined at the time was "boxcar bearings". Procedures were changed in an expedient manner.
