the other problem i had was the dualmatics are to large diameter on the inner protion to allow a pw or m37 wheel to be installed or removed without removing the hub first! the set i blew up in moab was a set i had turned down on the lathe about 3/16" so the wheel would fit, a slight design flaw if you ask me....vaughn, i lived at north lake tahoe and dealt with snow and ice, no sand except what caltrans blended witch sodium chloride and covered the roads with it! and unlike dune busting the rpms and road speed were much less than what you were doing, i can see how a sudden burst of speed and instant traction would allow the needles to engage fast and blow out the hub, however, just like the warn instructions said, they are designed to give you short terms of traction for convenience and should be fully engaged when you anticipate needing them, thus your situation was pushing them past their limits...sudden traction can break lots of things, i have repaired lots of drivelines and diffs as well as replaced axles in big trucks as a result of hopping or intermittent traction situations...its tough on parts!
