IIs the PTO in constant engagement to the main cluster gear?

In other words, is the PTO gears ALWAYS in motion while the truck is running? And transmission is in gear? Or even in neutral?

I’m trying to figure out some transmission noises on my wc57 with winch.

I just spent three days pulling out, rebuilding, and putting all back together only to get an even noisier transmission than I had before!

It was noisy in nuetral with clutch let out.
Push in clutch, no noise.

I went thru this exact same thing years ago so I knew where to look and to replace once apart. But that was a non-PTO transmission.

Anyway, I had this exact same noise, years ago, It ended up being “pitting” of the main shaft “nose” and the female portion of the input shaft, along with a rusty and pitted roller bearing.

Found the Same thing in this Tranny. Same pitted parts. I replaced those parts with brand new shiny and Pitt-free parts. They had near mint surfaces.

All the other gears were mint. No breaks, chips or pitts on the gear teeth.
So reused them all

I also replaced the front and rear ball bearing with brand new while I was in there.

It’s all Together now and it’s noisier than it was before!!

Now so I’m starting to wonder if it’s PTO noise all along?
