As long as the drum is always held tight against the mounting leg, either by the clutch dog, or by the brake, you should be okay. It is okay if the drum slides back towards the gear box when there is nothing to push it away.

Is your clutch lever new or old? There are subtle differences in these and some of the newly manufactured ones, over the past couple of decades, have been way out of specs. Sometimes it takes a space between the clutch arm pivot bracket and the gearbox casting.

If the locking bracket mounted to the rear winch angle is new, it could have the holds in the wrong place causing the arm to not travel far enough, or to "park" in the correct location.
