You didn't read that correctly:
"It is estimated that 10,720,000 of them have a direct or associated connection to the auto industry and will be seriously impacted or lose their jobs if Detroit fails."
The figures come from the Commerce Dept.
Seriously impacted means that the Deli across from the assembly plant loses customers, the gardener at the main office isn't needed, the company that launders the uniforms has to cut back, The transport company isn't needed, the guy that fuels the corporate cars, the company providing tooling, the local hotel, the airlines that the buyers travel upon, the advertising firm, the local newspaper running the Sunday specials, etc. etc.
Just because they are not directly connected or don't go out of business too, doesn't mean that they will not be hurt.
