I have never installed new wood in a bed, so I'm only speculating. And more of my working life has been as a carpenter/cabinet maker and general contractor. It would seem better to adjust the angle on the crossmember, although also quite difficult. Would it be possible to relieve the underside of the boards to allow them to fit under the bed sides?
Again, these are only the thoughts of an 83 year old retired wood worker who has been wrong many times before. :)
