You've done a beautiful job with pre-painting. Will the paint handle the suggested processes?
I still think even 1/4" relief on solid oak would not affect it's strength.
In the end, it's your decision on how to handle this, however it still might be good to take it up with Tisdale. How many other similar pieces have the same problem? Surely he would want to know and replace for the sake of quality control.
