I will be rid of my last Powerstroke very shortly. After owning a 6.0 Powerstroke and never getting Ford to honor a warranty for a bad head. I traded it in for a 6.4 Powerstroke. Which, at the time I had read was a great motor ,if you deleted the DPF and EGR coolers. Well, I just hit 210,000 miles with nearly no issues. But now I am pushing coolant out of the degas bottle. My machinist father-in-law has advised me to run from the truck while I still can.He says the only 6.4 replacement motor to buy is a Ford OEM. He will not rebuild them. I am now considering either a 2006 to 2007.5 Cummins mega cab or a 5.7 gasser mega cab.
My wife and I are people who believe in fixing what we have and want to own things worth fixing. If I go diesel again and it ends up costing us a bunch of money she will be really upset. So, do I:
Make the bigger investment in the diesel considering maintenance costs are higher.
OR
Go with the 5.7 hemi. Which seems to be reliable and cheap to maintain.
I do periodically tow a 6,500 lb trailer and Washington isn't flat.
