Old leather seals.

I have to replace the oil seal on my new-to-me rear differential. It seems that the only thing that fits this is a NOS leather seal.

My question is : Is there any prep I should do to this before install it? Should I soak it in motor oil maybe?

Also, I'm hoping I can replace this without pulling out the differential. Is there a compelling reason I should pull out the differential for a seal replacement?
