It was head gasket. But why?

So the gasket was completely blown away between #1 & #2. But really, why does this happen? What does one do to put undue strain on a head gasket? This one was a Felpro gasket and it was less than a year old. Not a lot of miles, since I get maybe 1 hour driving for every two weeks wrenching.

What makes them fail? Is there some black art to making them survive?
