Old Gas

How long can gas sit in a tank (fuel system) before it becomes a problem? I've heard everything from 3 weeks to a couple of years. Does it make a difference whether the fuel system is for a large(PW) or small(lawn mower) engine/fuel system? Any gas or fuel system experts (expert: person having at least one carb, fuel pump, or fuel line gum up on them in their life-time and figured out why) care to offer any thoughts on this? As Usual...Thanks!
