Thought I'd post & see if anyone has a solution here or if it's just a terrible bit of engineering with no way to fix....
So my 64 Fargo W300 had a Timkin 223 Transfercase installed from the factory (A W500 TCase)
So this truck has 7000 original miles & the only leak on the truck is the Tcase & it's at the parking brake drum. So it's leaked here since I've owned it but I always intended to fix it because it's the only leak on the truck.
I just assumed it was the seal but the other day, I removed the drum, shoes, yoke & backing plate to get at the seal...as soon as I looked at the seal & yoke...I knew that wasn't the issue because they look like new. So I start looking closer...the yoke wasn't bolted on with a nut & washer like a normal yoke...the yoke slides into a spline, like normal & then there's just a c-clip that keeps the yoke & drum from sliding off.
As you can imagine..there's a small amount of play allowing the yoke to slide on the spline..I mean a small amount but a few hundred thousands of an inch. So I could see clearly that the oil had been escaping through the spline. Also...the brake shoes weren't wet & so that's the only way the oil could escape without soaking them.
So there was some kind of sealer on the spline but apparently not good enough. What kind of sealer can a man use in this situation where the thing is always going to have a certain amount of play?
Does anyone follow me here?? :)
Has anyone else had a 223 apart?
Merry Christmas Guys
