!st series bed questions

I am in the process of restoring the bed for my 48 and have a question. On the top rails there is about 3 feet of the roll(top edge) cut off over the spare mount. Does this belong there? Could someone have done this on there own to make it easer to mount/dsmont? A picture or two of a first series bed would be worth a thousand words. Thanks in advance, John
