The main reason for stacking the levers one behind the others is to prevent low range two wheel drive. The thought being that in two wheel drive, low range is to low a gear and under load or stress axle breakage is likely. So by spreading the torque load over both axles (4X4) you prevent a lot of damage to your running gear. Remember wise old farts designed this truck to work and last...Jackson
