I was a loyal Red Wing wearer most of my life, but the quality went down hill. On the first "bad" pair they had switched to a cheaper kind of thread (cotton?) that rotted out after a year or so and I had to have them re-sewn. On the pair after that they had switched from a solid urethane sole (which I really liked for how well it held up on concrete) to a urethane-covered foam rubber sole. It didn't take long for the urethane to wear through. Also that pair came with a hole in the tongue as if the leather had been scraped too thin at that spot. I didn't take them back, because I figured they'd still be functional, but you'd think they would cut around defects like that in the factory. I prefer an all-leather smooth-soled work boot, but Red Wing just isn't there any more quality wise. And yes, these were their high-end line that is supposed to still be made in the USA.
