After the troubles I had with Red Wings, Hoffman's sold me some Danners last spring that have held up really well. They're fancy light-weight boots with a lot of sewn-together cloth and leather bits and goretex lining, all of which seems a bit much to me.
I'm suspicious of glued-on soles, because most that I've had have come loose when they got wet, but these have stayed on so far, including wading out in the creek to stop my dog from killing a fawn. They're lighter, and they don't have to be greased (can't really grease them if I wanted to) so perhaps modern really is better finally.
If I want to get real leather work boots, Hoffman's makes low-top boots now, just as heavy as their lineman's and logger's boots. They're about $300, but might be worth a try someday. Glad to know the Danners are holding up for you. If I get two years out of a pair of work boots, I'll be satisfied.
