The color that you see. Bearings have either a gray or silver overlay when new depending on the manufacturer and will be worn off in the first 10 miles of driving. What you see is the copper/lead bearing and its fine. You can see particles embedded in it, their designed to do that, it's doing its job and its not worn out.
Getting another cap may be a challenge unless someone has a rod and is willing to part with it. Here is an EBay link to a new rod.

Chances are the rod is ok but you can check it with plastic gauge on the upper part of the rod gap. I would also buy new rod bearings and install, you might even consider new mains. Once you remove the bearing off the cap, the size will be indicated on the opposite side. Check with plastic gauge during installation, you may need to shim.
