Hi Tom,
Not vaseline, but the engine oil itself. I usually change the oil pump/distributor drive shaft at the same time. I use the old shaft to make a tool, less the distributor drive gear, to turn the pump until oil is pumped throughout the entire engine. This will ensure that you do not have a "dry" start.
