I have to check the clearance on a rear main bearing (I'm won't mention that it's on a GMC 6.2L diesel). If I use plastigage, do I just cut a small strip, lay it on the bearing, install and torque the bearing cap, and then remove the cap, to measure the width of the gage? How long should I cut the piece? Should I lay it across the short transverse of the bearing, or on the long transverse? Any information is greatly appreciated.
