Hi:

I posted yesterday, but the forum changed before I could get a lot of response. It may be kind of long, but I would like to post my problem below. Please feel free to respond privately or on this forum.

There has been several burns over time, the first of which had apparently fried out the instrument panel, this happened before I bought my truck. When we took apart the instrument panel, to see what the problem was, we found that it had been fried. We replaced the old one with a different one, and it is still working. Once I was able to get the engine components together, We tried to get the thing running. It would turn over, but stop running when you let go of the key. We found a few hot spots, and ultimately found the wires in the main harness melted together. wE DID BYPASS THE THING TO GET IT RUNNING, THIS IS WHEN WE COULD FIND ALL THE HOT SPOTS. wE FRIED TWO CERMACH FUSES OR RESISTERS ON THE FIREWALL.

I paid only $700 for the truck initially and have put about another $700.00 to $800.00 and am running out of money and patients.

I can not do wiring on my own, so took it to a local reputable mechanic. He has advised me that people have messed with the wiring of this vehicle to the point that he would not do any patch work as he didn't want the liability of it.

Thank you for responding, this is quite frustrating. I am not a motor head or even a mechanic, I just wanted a truck that would run so I could use it for hunting and to hall stuff. Thanks again for responding, I am just at the end of my rope.

Below is another message I sent to another person regarding the same subject.

Hi:

I have a 1977 full time 4WD dodge truck. It isn't in that great of shape,
but I am having a major electrical problem. I have recently put on the
following parts for the electrical system and have experienced the following
problems.
I have put on a new starter, coil, starter sillenoid, and resister or
ceramic fuse on the firewall.

With all of this replaced, I could start the truck, and when I let go the
starter switch, the engine quits. I have been to bypass the main wire
harness, and it will run. There is a major hotspot right by the ceramic
fuse, as after the truck was running for about 30 minutes or so, there was a
crack in the resister.

I am looking for any ideas you may have, I can't fix this, but I don't want
to put too much money into this for diagnosis.
